REVIEW: The InterContinental Khao Yai Resort

InterContinental Khao Yai Resort

Located in the heart of Thailand, north-east of Bangkok, Khao Yai is not only home to Thailand’s first national park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, but also boasts a delightful blend of cooler temperatures, vibrant vineyards, and mouthwatering local cuisine. Overall, it is a captivating destination for travelers, where a hidden paradise like the InterContinental Khao Yai Resort is nestled deep in the middle of it all and promises an unforgettable experience for its guests.

The InterContinental Khao Yai Resort, which opened in late 2022, is a luxurious escape set within 19 hectares of lush tropical landscape, featuring over 30,000 trees and five tranquil lakes. With a total of 159 guest rooms, suites, and villas, this resort combines renowned Thai hospitality with intuitive service to offer an unparalleled accommodation experience in Khao Yai. The property can be reached with a leisurely, scenic 2.5-hour drive from Bangkok, alongside the completion of a new highway due later this year and a new high-speed rail connection due for completion in 2026 will shorten the journey.

Architect Bill Bensley’s (who also designed other popular properties such as The Slate) visionary design draws inspiration from the romance of train travel and the region’s historical significance as a rail gateway during the reign of King Rama V. Unique to the resort are 19 meticulously restored heritage train carriages from the 19th century, transformed into luxurious suites that transport guests back to the glamorous age of rail travel. Each suite is distinctively themed and named after various destinations, providing a nostalgic ambiance.

The storytelling woven into the resort’s design centers around a fictional train conductor named Somsak, whose passion for train journeys across Thailand and neighboring countries enriches the guest experience. Many of the railcars have been lovingly recovered from around Thailand, some having remained unused for over 50 years, with Ficus trees even taking root on their roofs. This thoughtful preservation of nature is evident throughout the property, further enhancing the feeling of being connected to Mother Earth.

Checking in at the resort feels like stepping back in time; the reception area resembles a vintage train ticket station, complete with charming train-themed decor that sets the tone for your stay. Getting around the expansive property is effortless thanks to a convenient buggy service or leisurely walks through the lush landscape—just remember to apply mosquito repellent as you’re nestled in the middle of nature after all!

Heritage Railcar 1 Bedroom Suite - Partial Bedroom and Sink (2)

Upon entering our room for the weekend, the Heritage Railcar One-Bedroom Suite, immediately transported us to a bygone era reminiscent of the Orient Express. One of only 12 special refurbished railcar suites in the hotel, the room features an open balcony and an outdoor bathtub that invites nature in, creating an immersive experience that allows you to truly connect with your surroundings. The decor is a delightful mix of plush furnishings and rich mahogany accents, enhanced by delicate bespoke fabrics from the renowned Thai silk company Jim Thompson, which add a touch of local flair.

Each railcar suite was uniquely named after different destinations and ours was no exception- aptly named Singapore from where we came from. The attention to detail in design is remarkable; faux windows create enchanting views that mimic the scenery outside, while modern amenities ensure comfort and luxury. I particularly appreciated the individual climate control and premium in-room amenities, which included Byredo toiletries and oversized towels that added an extra layer of indulgence.

Heritage Railcar 1 Bedroom Suite - Outdoor Terrace

Outdoor spaces are plentiful, whether it’s a private plunge pool or a cozy terrace perfect for morning coffee or evening relaxation. While I would have loved a small table and chair set in the living area for added convenience, it’s a minor detail in an otherwise exceptional stay.

Breakfast at Somying’s Kitchen is a delightful experience that sets a positive tone for the day. Named after the mother of the train conductor, this all-day dining restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seatings, allowing guests to enjoy their meals surrounded by the resort’s lush tropical landscape. The atmosphere is vibrant, with a charming decor that blends modern elegance with nostalgic touches reminiscent of a retro diner.

The breakfast spread involves a semi-buffet affair featuring a variety of options, from fresh pastries and cold cuts to seasonal Thai desserts that circulate around the restaurant for guests to sample. A standout feature is the live noodle cooking station, where the executive chef prepares delicious dishes right before your eyes. Guests can indulge in an array of hot dishes, including classic scrambled eggs, eggs benedict to a light Avocado Toast topped with smoked salmon.

Before breakfast, guests can take a refreshing dip in the resort’s outdoor Water Tank Swimming Pool measuring 12 x 6 meters, to invigorate their senses and start their day on a high note. Late in the evenings, the Terminus Bar also has a tempting 1-for-1 happy hour deal for all drinks, so guests should take advantage of the golden opportunity to sit back and relax with some tipples.

Poirot - Interior

Dining at Poirot Restaurant at the InterContinental Khao Yai is a truly enchanting experience that transports you back to the elegance of the roaring twenties. Named after Agatha Christie’s famous detective Hercule Poirot, this exquisite venue not only captivates with its decor but also delights with its thoughtfully curated French menu. The ambiance, reminiscent of first-class train travel, sets the stage for a memorable meal, whether you’re seated indoors in one of the exclusive tables for two or enjoying the outdoor seating with friends and family.

The menu features signature dishes that highlight classic French cuisine. I started my meal with the Soupe à l’oignon, a quintessential French onion soup that, while flavorful, could have benefited from a slightly thicker and richer broth. However, the core flavors were well-executed, with the rich stock harmonizing beautifully with the caramelized onions and Gruyère cheese atop crusty bread.

Another highlight was the Beef Tartare, rich and savory, making for an excellent appetizer that paired wonderfully with a glass of Vinecrafter Merlot. Each dish was not only delicious but also presented with an artistry that enhanced the dining experience. The restaurant’s quarterly murder mystery dinners add an exciting twist to your visit, making it more than just a meal but an interactive experience that engages guests in a fun and unique way. The combination of exceptional food, elegant surroundings, and immersive storytelling makes Poirot Restaurant a must-visit during your stay.

In contrast, our experience at Papillon Bar was less satisfying. While the bar was beautifully designed within an upcycled train carriage—creating a playful and flirtatious ambiance—the cocktail offerings fell short of expectations. The focus on classic French cocktails is commendable, but I found the price-to-quality ratio lacking. Most of the signature cocktails relied heavily on Prosecco as their base, which detracted from the overall quality and creativity that we had anticipated from such a venue.

While the ambiance is delightful for pre-or post-dinner drinks, it felt more like we were paying for the atmosphere rather than the drinks themselves. Additionally, the happy hour promotion should start earlier; moving it to 9 PM would better cater to guests looking to unwind after dinner. Despite these shortcomings, Papillon Bar remains a charming spot for casual gatherings, but it could benefit from refining its cocktail menu to match the high standards set by the resort’s dining options.

Swan Lake Lawn

At the InterContinental Khao Yai Resort, there’s no shortage of activities to enhance your stay. If you’re looking to stay active, the fully equipped fitness center offers breathtaking views of the pond, making your workout feel more like a serene escape. However, if you’re seeking a truly enchanting experience, don’t miss the resort’s hidden gem— the Swan Lake.

The Swan Lake is a tranquil paradise untouched by human hands, perfect for nature lovers. Here, you’ll find graceful swans gliding across the water, and a self-serve cycling kiosk that allows you to explore the scenic surroundings on two wheels. For the best experience, we recommend venturing out in the late afternoon when the heat is more manageable and countless picturesque spots await you for those Instagram-worthy moments.

For families, the Planet Trekkers Kids’ Club is a delightful haven housed in its own charming heritage railcar. Complete with a garden and rabbit enclosure, this program is designed for children aged 4-12, offering a range of engaging activities that spark curiosity and foster a love for nature. Kids can embark on a Botanical Garden Treasure Hunt, learn about sustainable ingredients in the miniature vegetable patch, or enjoy Thai dancing classes and koi fish feeding sessions.

Back on Track Spa - Treatment Room

You can indulge in wellness programs at the Back on Track Spa, where relaxation meets rejuvenation in a beautifully restored heritage railcar featuring four private treatment suites. The Back on Track Spa truly embraces Khao Yai’s natural serenity. Inside the upcycled railcar, skilled therapists provide an array of treatments using 100% organic skincare products from Siam Botanicals. You can choose from organic facials, soothing massages, and even a Junior Spa Experience tailored for younger guests. The Traditional Healing Full Body Massage utilizes age-old Thai remedies with ginger and plai root to ease muscle tension, while the Coastal Breeze bathing experience envelops you in rich organic oils and essential oils like rosemary and peppermint for ultimate relaxation. We highly recommend a good massage or treatment before checking out so that you’ll be fully revitalized before your long ride back to Bangkok!

An indoor seating at Tea Carriage InterContinental Khao Yai Resort

Lastly, the Tea Carriage at the InterContinental Khao Yai Resort is a serene retreat that offers a unique and tranquil setting for afternoon tea. Nestled within a beautifully restored railcar, this charming venue creates a peaceful atmosphere that invites guests to unwind and indulge in a delightful culinary experience. The decor reflects the charm of vintage train travel, making it an ideal spot for leisurely gatherings with friends or intimate moments with loved ones.

The extensive menu features a traditional afternoon tea service that showcases an array of sweet and savory treats, all infused with local cultural influences. From delicate pastries to flavorful sandwiches, each bite is thoughtfully crafted to provide a taste of Khao Yai’s rich culinary heritage. For those looking to elevate their experience, optional champagne and rosé pairings are available, adding a touch of luxury to this already exquisite affair.
