Having undergone a recent revamp, the opulent Club 5 at PARKROYAL on Beach Road is set to have a whole host of activities in the upcoming weeks, the first of which is a Guest Bartender Shift on 28th April!
For one night only, on 28th April 2021, bartenders Sam Wong and Edwin Poh will be taking over the bar, along with resident Head Bartender Ong Jun Han, to shake up their take on classic cocktails. Sam, the eponymous Ah Sam of Ah Sam Cold Drinks Stall, and currently owner and bartender of cafe-bar Kizuna; Edwin, the brand ambassador of Matusalem Rum, and Jun Han, first met at Ah Sam Cold Drinks Stall in 2013.
Take a seat at the bar to watch the bartenders in action, or at the lush & glitzy tables on the former ballroom floor, and indulge in a drink or two – all delightfully exquisite, with familiar & nostalgic flavours, made with Nordes Gin, Jura Whisky and Matusalem Rum.
Each guest bartender will be presenting a trio of drinks, with Sam’s being inspired by the The Great Gatsby, with a focus on the reinvention of classic drinks like the Junglebird and Manhattan. Meanwhile Edwin’s series of drinks takes inspiration from the surrounding Kampong Gelam and its culture, heritage and flavours.
Go for the Shine Bright like a Diamond (by Sam Wong), a Nordes gin-based tipple inspired by the classic French 75 that is glitzed up with edible glitter and topped off with prosecco. With citrusy yuzu notes and lovely, bright floral notes from the hibiscus & lavender in the gin, this is a wonderful starting drink. Of course, if you want to start off the night strong, go for the Kopi Bon Hon (by Sam Wong), where Jura 12 Years Old and coffee vermouth is infused with a blend of local coffee beans – and packs a veritable, buzzy punch, with gorgeous nutty notes. Not one for the faint-hearted.
We thoroughly enjoyed Edwin’s Rojak-Rojak – a take on the local salad dish where Nordes gin is mixed with shrimp paste, pineapple shrub (pineapple vinegar), tamarind syrup, lime juice, ginger flower, with a rim of chunky peanut butter. Don’t be put off by the mention of shrimp paste in a cocktail – this tipple was surprisingly refreshing and balanced, with light umami notes and was deliciously floral and smooth! For those who prefer something more dessert-like, go for the Morning Kaya Roti Set, a smooth, creamy tipple with heady pandan flavours made from Jura 12 Years and Kahlua, along with pandan, coconut and egg yolk, served with a side of toast.
All drinks are S$24 nett each. Do note that there are two seatings for this event: one at 6pm to 7.30pm, and 8pm to 9.30pm.
