Located in the Tokaj region of Hungary, Juliet Victor Winery is a brand that straddles the old and new – founded in 2016, with its vineyards in the heritage-rich village of Mád, an area rich in winemaking resources and heritage. The winery aims to produce the finest Tokaj wines, and to redefine the perception of Hungarian wine globally – and safe to say, the numerous awards they have received since inception indeed prove this, having accolades such as the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) Platinum, Gold and Best in Show awards.
Juliet Victor specializes in dry single vineyard furmint wines and naturally sweet vintages, as well as Tokaj’s historic specialities such as the Szamorodni and Aszú wines; curated and crafted by winemaker Zsolt Vincze, son-in-law of Hungary’s most influential winemaking figure, István Szepsy. Main grape varietals used by Juliet Victor Winery include furmint, a white Hungarian grape varietal, as well as sárgamuskotály, a muscat blanc varietal. Wines are aged in Hungarian oak casks, which are lightly toasted so as to enhance, rather than mask, the flavours of fruit while aging. The wines are carefully.
With the winery’s expansion into Asian markets, Singapore is their very first Asian expansion. We had the chance to try two of Juliet Victor’s award-winning wines – the Szamorodni 2017, as well as the Furmint Bomboly 2018.
Categorised as a dry, single-vineyard wine, the Furmint Bomboly 2018 was awarded the Gold at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2021 with 95 points. It was delightfully crisp, with layered notes of stone fruit and minerals that allowed for a deliciously long finish. A refreshing, elegant tipple to be had as a pre-dinner drink, or paired with seafood or white meats.
The sweet estate blend of Szamorodni 2017 was awarded the Best in Show in the Decanter World Wine Awards 2020 with 97 points. Pouring a gorgeous, clear amber, this blend is on the sweeter side, yet wonderfully complex – notes of stone fruit and citrus dance on the tongue with an elegant floral fragrance and light minerality, one that prompts you to take sip after sip. Best savoured on a hot afternoon with a savoury pastry, or as an evening tipple.
Wines are available to purchase in Singapore through Juliet Victor’s Singapore e-commerce platform and brand site
