One of Singapore’s most successful conductors will be returning for a one night show with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Wong Kahchun has been appointed to various high profile orchestras with his most recent appointment as the principal conductor of the Halle in Manchester, and will be showcasing his conducting skills with two orchestral masterpieces.
For one night only on 28 March 2025, Wong will be joined on stage with German classical pianist Gerhard Oppitz for a Brahms piano concerto – more specifically the Piano Concerto No 2. The second piano concerto is an interesting one, written in four movements instead of three, and requires both technical mastery and artistry at its best. Gerhard Oppitz, one of Europe’s best concerto pianists, is one to anticipate as he brings to life the lyrical beauty of Brahms, who describes the piece as a very small piano concerto with a very small and pretty scherzo.
The night will continue with the same fiery passion of Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, a work that is as political as its musically inclined. The story behind the Fifth Symphony has been called ‘a Soviet artist’s creative reply to just criticism’, with a dramatic yet evocative piece that has become Shostakovich’s most performed symphony till date.
Get ready for a night of intense emotion, which will give you a new appreciation of Brahms and Shostokavich under the leadership of Wong.
SSO presents Kahchun Wong and Gerhard Oppitz – Brahms and Shostakovich on Friday, 28 March 2025. Tickets from S$15, and are available online
