Tessellate was founded by May on a trip to India, where she ended up at a gem store and befriending the owner and sharing stories of her travels and more. She was then inspired to start her own jewellery store, with each piece thoughtfully designed around the symbolisations and intentions for the wearer.

Even till today, May still personally sources and handpicks every gem at Tessellate as she believes in only offering the best stones at her store. Personalisation and customisation is also a huge driving factor for May, who wants customers to feel like they are expressing their own personality as an accessory.

Stepping into their newest flagship store at Wheelock Place, their ready-to-wear pieces catch my attention with their simple designs. Over at a corner, zodiac gemstones and a necklace engraving station allow you to customise everyday pieces easily – making for a great gift for loved ones. Other collections designed around gemstones, with various materials like rose gold and silver to choose from. The classic designs are anything but dated, meant to be worn everyday, for every occasion.

But it’s the bespoke counter where the best pieces are created. While most people are looking to customise an engagement ring, Tessellate also designs wedding bands, Si Dian Jin, as well as other statement pieces like jade bracelets or pendants. Their signature double jade bracelet design is a showstopper, as it connects two pieces of coloured jade for a modern twist on a classic jewellery piece that can easily look too traditional.

A designer will sit down with you to understand you and your partner’s story, and will try to incorporate as much into the design down to the gemstones as they guide you on the journey to creating your statement piece. This could be a flower of significance, a meaningful design, or even an icon! One of May’s favourite pieces was from a couple that designed a ring with the logo of the game that brought them together. Another designed the flower cluster on her ring after the bouquet of flowers from her significant other. It’s these stories that will give Tessellate’s pieces a place in our jewellery collections forever.
