A Dream of Red Mansions is a classic Chinese Classic written by Cao Xueqin in the late 18th Century, and the National Ballet of China will be bringing an adaptation of defining work in Chinese literature to Singapore from 12 to 15 March 2026 at the Esplanade Theatres by the Bay.

The celebrated two-act ballet production will be touring Asia, and the adaptation of the Chinese classic follows the tragic romance of Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu against the aristocratic life of feudal China. Considered one of the Chinese Four Great Classics, the twelve dance numbers is titled and corresponds to the twelve independent chapters that form the story’s narrative.

The National Ballet of China is renowned for their blend of Western classical technique and Chinese artistic heritage, showcasing their mastery of both dance styles through the performance – where playful romance, bittersweet longing, and the play of light takes the audience through a dreamlike realm. Set against breathtaking visuals and graceful costumes, the dancers movements unfold on stage like visual poetry.
