Siem Reap, the gateway to the ancient wonders of Angkor has always beckoned travelers with its rich history, stunning temples, and captivating culture. With AirAsia now offering daily direct flights from Singapore to Siem Reap, the highly sought-after destination has become increasingly accessible to travelers from Singapore. The new air route will open up Siem Reap to new tourism markets and it will serve as an attractive destination for those seeking a blend of ancient culture with a touch of modern luxury.
For travelers looking to indulge in an exceptional stay while exploring Siem Reap’s treasures, the Shinta Mani Angkor resort stands out as a premier accommodation option. This luxurious retreat offers an unparalleled experience, particularly through its exclusive Bensley Collection Pool Villas designed by Bill Bensley himself!
The Bensley Collection Pool Villa
Upon our arrival, we were immediately awestruck by the sheer spaciousness of our 156 sqm Pool Villa. Inspired by traditional Cambodian stilt houses, the design of the villa seamlessly blends Khmer aesthetics with modern luxury. From the intricate designs on the staircases to the handmade rattan chandelier, every detail exudes local charm and sophistication. The clever use of glass ceiling windows and contrasting colors creates an illusion of even more space, while the small private garden offers a serene paradise.
The private pool proved to be a godsend after a long day of exploring the temples, providing a refreshing respite from the scorching Cambodian heat. While the outdoor bathtub with artistically arranged lotus petals and the second-floor balcony offer additional luxuries, do remember to apply mosquito repellent liberally if you plan to enjoy these features. The vintage-inspired key system adds a quaint touch, reminiscent of living during simpler times, when was the last time you visited a hotel or a resort that did not require the use of a keycard? Another highlight of staying at the pool villa was the unique breakfast-in-bed service, containing unique breakfast dishes and drinks that are only exclusively available to villa guests!
What truly set our experience apart was the impeccable butler service. Our Bensley Butler, Mr. Som, went above and beyond to ensure our comfort and satisfaction. From the moment we were picked up at the airport in a well-appreciated air-conditioned car (complete with cold drinks and freshly baked cookies), to the last-minute itinerary changes, Mr. Som’s attention to detail was remarkable. The butlers’ ability to anticipate our needs before we even voiced them – such as preparing glassware for our whisky – was truly impressive. The butler service is only applicable for guests who are staying in the pool villas and they are available 24/7 and can communicate with you over Telegram or WhatsApp should you require anything.
For an authentic immersion into Cambodian gastronomy, a visit to Kroya, Shinta Mani Angkor’s signature restaurant, is an absolute must. Helmed by Executive Chef Chanrith Wan, Kroya offers a culinary journey that celebrates the Kingdom’s rich flavors and traditions. This culinary gem offers guests a delightful journey through Cambodia’s rich flavors and traditions, all within an elegant and inviting setting.
After a long journey, treat yourself to Kroya’s exquisite Afternoon Tea (US$15++ per person). Sink into comfortable seating and savor warm pastries and sweet treats, accompanied by unlimited cups of strong coffee or soothing tea. It’s the perfect way to unwind and recharge before exploring the wonders of Angkor. However, the true star of Kroya is undoubtedly its Six-Course dinner (US$50++ per person), a curated culinary adventure crafted by Chef Chanrith Wan. With a menu that changes every six months (slated to refresh again in April), each visit promises a new and exciting exploration of Cambodian flavors.
Our culinary adventure began with the Banteay Srei Village Jackfruit Curry Dip. Served alongside crispy rice crackers, cucumber jade, and vegetable crudités, this meatless appetizer proved to be a delightful surprise. The curry dip, bursting with savory flavors, was so rich that it defied its vegetarian nature. We could easily imagine savoring it with warm bread or fragrant rice – a promising start to the meal. Next came the Roasted and Crusted Chicken Roulade with Green Mango Salad. The star of this dish was undoubtedly the chili purée, a fiery concoction that masterfully balanced sweetness, spice, and acidity. The purée added a thrilling kick to the roulade, harmonizing beautifully with the protein and the refreshing green mango salad, elevated by the texture of the cashew nuts.
The Pouk Village Krek Soup was a perfect example of Cambodian cuisine’s distinct flavor profiles. Featuring chicken breast, Cowa mangosteen leaves picked from the hotel’s sister resort at Shinta Mani Wild, foraged red tree ants, and tamarind broth, the soup boasted a remarkable consistency and balance. Reminiscent of a harmonious blend between old cucumber soup and tom yum soup, it offered a delightful mix of sweet and savory notes. While the inclusion of red tree ants might initially raise eyebrows, it is highly encouraged to at least give it a try. Their slightly spicy kick and acidity, when combined with the broth, created a unique sensation akin to enjoying prawn crackers with your soup.
The Sautéed Koh Kong Scallops was our favourite seafood course. The scallops, accompanied by string beans, finger chili, minced pork, and holy basil, were an explosion of flavor, the richness of the minced pork sauce far surpassing the more commonplace notes of the sea bass offering. For the main course, the Smoked 28-day Butter-Aged Ribeye was the undisputed champion. Served with three distinct sauces – Kampot pepper lime, spicy tamarind, and Prahok – the ribeye offered a symphony of flavors. The Kampot pepper, with its fragrant and herbaceous aroma, lent a unique depth of flavor that effortlessly cut through the richness of the meat that blended beautifully with the rice and spicy sauces.
The finale, the Kroya Coconut Chocolate Ball and Nom Tailai Cake, was a feast for both the eyes and the palate. The dessert, artfully resembling a traditional lotus flower, was a masterpiece of balance, seamlessly merging sweetness and savoriness. As warm milk was delicately poured onto the dessert, the chocolate petals gracefully unfurled, revealing a smoky exterior and a sweet, tempting cake underneath.
We had the opportunity to pay a visit to a local village supported by the Shinta Mani Foundation which showcased the transformative power of community-driven initiatives. Founded in 2004, the Foundation has been working tirelessly to uplift Cambodian communities through various projects focusing on education, direct assistance, health, and economic empowerment.
The Foundation’s educational programs are particularly impactful. They provide opportunities for underprivileged children from poor areas who previously had no access to education. These young individuals are given vocational training in hospitality, often starting with housekeeping and food & beverage jobs at Shinta Mani hotels. After 10 months of practical experience, many are supported to pursue university education, opening doors to brighter futures.
Direct assistance projects are another cornerstone of the Foundation’s work. Visitors can witness firsthand how the Foundation has improved living conditions by providing new houses and plumbing systems to local citizens. The Foundation also collaborates with international organizations like Global Dental Relief from the US and Australian NGOs to provide essential food aid to those in need. One of the most touching aspects is the Foundation’s support for expectant mothers who cannot afford proper medical care, ensuring safe births and giving children a healthier start in life.
Additionally, the Foundation offers student loans for those wishing to pursue higher education at the university level and micro-loans to start small businesses or farms, supporting the overall community economy that further emphasizes their commitment to long-term community development.
Visiting these villages allows travelers to see the real impact of sustainable tourism and community development. It’s an opportunity to understand how targeted initiatives can break the cycle of poverty and create lasting positive change. The experience is likely to be both humbling and inspiring, offering a deeper connection to Cambodia beyond its famous temples and tourist attractions.
Other Activities
To make the most of your visit to Siem Reap, consider these activities that offer a mix of relaxation, cultural immersion, and historical exploration. Start your evening with drinks at the hotel’s Bensley Bar, where you can enjoy a happy hour promotion of 1-for-1 drinks on everything from spirits to craft beers and Khmer-inspired cocktails from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM. On select nights, there will be a live jazz band that gets guests in the right mood and adds to the overall ambiance.
For ultimate relaxation, indulge in a visit to the Khmer Tonics Spa. Opt for the hour-long Shinta Mani Signature massage (US$45), with the possibility of securing a private spa suite that includes a jacuzzi and a private relaxation area. This is an ideal way to unwind after a day of temple exploration. To delve into the local culture, participate in a 2-hour cooking class (US$90++ for two people), which includes a private tour of the local markets to discover fresh ingredients like Kampot peppers and seasonal mangoes that can be purchased for your loved ones back home. Afterwards, return to the hotel to learn about Cambodian cuisine and prepare a 4-course meal under the guidance of sous Chef Peou or even have the chance for a conversation with Chef Chanrith Wan himself if he has the time!
Consider visiting the nearby Apopo Visitor Centre (US$10 per person), to learn about the vital role African Giant Pouched Rats play in demining contaminated land in Cambodia. Of course, no trip to Siem Reap would be complete without a full-day excursion to Angkor Wat. Enlist the assistance of your hotel butler to arrange a personal guide, ensuring you see the major temples and capture stunning sunrise or sunset photos. Be prepared for potentially high temperatures (up to 40°C) by wearing comfortable clothing and staying hydrated throughout your visit.
