We’re surprised that it took this long for someone to come up with this fusion of mala and curry, but Monster Curry has just upped the heat with their latest menu additions. Available for a limited time, the Monster Curry at Chinatown Point will be the only place where you can try this spicy combination.
The main star is the Pork Katsu Mala Curry Rice (S$13.80), where their signature Japanese curry is given an extra numbing spice. The mala curry is entirely homemade, together with Monster Curry’s signature curry that is made with 14 ingredients and cooked for two days. The crunchy pork cutlet dipped in the curry surprisingly worked, with the chilli oil and numbing si chuan spices mixing seamlessly with the curry.
Just like their other curry dishes, select your spice level from three different options, starting from slight spicy for those xiao-la people.
If you’re not feeling like curry, try the Crispy Soft Shell Crab Mala Pasta (S$16.80). The Italian-inspired dish is tossed in that same homemade numbing mala sauce, served with deep-fried soft shell crab on the side. You won’t be able to choose your spice level here as the sauce comes in one spice level. This was slightly more spicy, although the spice was a slow burn that still allowed you to enjoy the crispiness of the soft shell crab. The pasta was cooked just al dente, with a bite that completed the mala sauce.
Finishing up the trio of dishes is the Tori Karaage Mala Curry Pizza (S$9.80). The small individual pan pizza is perfect for a single portion or to share. Made with Japanese flour, the pizza was a pleasant surprise. The chewy pizza came with chunks of chicken and cheese, with a thin layer of glistening mala oil. Again you won’t be able to choose your spice level, but it’s pretty manageable. But be warned that the combination of cheese and mala oil might not be acceptable for some people’s stomachs!
The exclusive Monster Curry mala-themed menu is only available at the Chinatown outlet for a limited time only. There’s no set end date when we asked the staff, but we were advised to drop by in the next month or so to try the spicy dishes.
