Celebrating Asian Television at the 21st Asian Television Awards

Held for two consecutive nights from 1 to 2 December at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre, the 21st Asian Television Awards concluded yesterday night with several anticipated winners as well as a few dark horses. A total of 46 awards were given out across two days – 18 on the trade dinner event held on 1 December and another 28 on the second day which was broadcasted “live” across Asia to a filled hall.
Hosted by Adrian Pang, Stephanie Carrington, Alden Richards, Baki Zainal and Fiona Su, audiences were treated to world-class performances by international acts like Singapore’s very own JJ Lin who serenaded the crowd with his popular hits, British Singer Charlie XCX who performed her latest single, Filipino powerhouse vocalist Ivy Grace Pardes who showcased her vocal abilities, Indonesian Dato’ Rossa who wooed the crowd with her signature throback memory lane hits and Korean Pop Sensation Amber Liu who brought down the entire convention hall to her numerous fans singing to her songs.
The big winner of Asian Television Awards 2016 is A Touch of Green – a Taiwanese drama series bagging 5 awards in total including 2 of the highly competitive categories with Tien Hsin winning Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Cheryl Yang winning Best Actress in a Leading Role. Its broadcaster – Public Television Service Foundation also clinched the “Terrestrial Channel of the Year” award with PTS.
Taiwan’s Chen Kun-Chang took home the award for Best Actor in a Leading Role category for his character in The Taste of Dang-Liang’s Family beating crowd favourite Christopher Lee, while Singapore’s Jeff Catz took home the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role category for his performance in Bunga Tanjong.
Descendants of the Sun clinched the Best Drama Series award amidst piercing screams by dedicated fans of the South Korean series. Adding onto South Korea’s wins is MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Awards) that managed to clinch the Best Entertainment (One-Off/Annual) award.
Biggest winner of the night is Al Jazeera English, winning The Terrestrial Channel of the Year, Cable and Satellite Channel of the Year and Cable and Satellite Network of the Year. Mediacorp Pte Ltd brought home the highly coveted Terrestrial Broadcaster of the Year for the 13th time.
