In keeping with its spirit of consistent innovation and cutting-edge advancements in its wine-production techniques, award winning wine label Marques de Casa Concha presents Etiqueta Negra. Literally translating as black label or black tie, this top-of-the-line vintage faithfully expresses Chile’s Puente Alto terroir with tremendous elegance and complexity.
Puente Alto: A World Class Terroir
The El Mariscal Vineyard has an altitude of 650 metres above sea level, in the foothills of the Andes and along the northern bank of the Maipo River. Recognised as one of the world’s finest terroirs, Puente Alto is a symbol not only for Concha y Toro, but for Chilean viticulture as well. As a result of rocky, nutrient poor soil, the plants are well balanced and produce small bunches with concentrated colour and tannins, delivering expressive wines with good body, ripe texture and excellent balance.
The vineyard is located in the coldest region of the Maipo valley, with a variation of around 18 degrees centigrade between daily high and low temperatures. This leads to a longer grape maturation time and a concentration and intensification of their aromas.
Etiqueta Negra 2016 Vintage
The first vintage in the series, the Etiqueta Negra 2016, is comprised of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Petit Verdot. The Cabernet Sauvignon delivers structure, the Cabernet Franc a fruity character, and the Petit Verdot lends complexity. The blend was aged in French oak barrels for 16 months, resulting in a wine with firm tannins, well-integrated oak, and tremendous body, character and balance.
This is the first wine in the Marques de Casa Concha line to be made of a blend of varietals. Marques de Casa Concha’s Head Winemaker, Marcelo Papa said,“The 2016 Etiqueta Negra has deep, dark red colour, intense aromas of red and black fruits such as cherries, blackcurrants, and blackberries that intermingle with notes of cedar, tar, and smoke. The palate has a smooth, almost silky texture and tremendous concentration framed by firm tannins that lead to a long and complex finish.”
The 2016 Etiqueta Negra Vintage is an extremely heavy-bodied wine that has a very strong fruity scent that leaves a very intense finish to the palete when sipped. Due to the large amount of Cabernet Sauvignon used in this particular blend, Etiqueta Negra pairs well with red or game meats, grilled or cooked in stews with strong-flavoured sauces and a touch of acidity as well as earthy herbs such as rosemary, thyme and bay leaf.
Etiqueta Negra is available by the glass for $31 at CUT by Wolfgang from the end of September and through VCT Singapore’s private sales channel: fazil.mohammad@vctwinegroup.com.sg. Price is available upon request. .
