Mrs Pho Turns Up the Heat with Charcoal Grill at Bussorah Street

Having occupied a hole in the wall outlet along Beach Road since 2014, Mrs Pho is no stranger to those who frequent Beach Road for its array of offerings in Southeast Asian cuisine. Now, Mrs Pho is turning up the heat with its new offerings of charcoal grilled items on its menu at the re-opening of the Bussorah Street outlet.
Similar to pho, the charcoal grill is a fixture in Vietnamese streetside food tradition. Some of their freshly grilled skewers offerings include Mountain Style Beef (S$7.90), Japanese Shiitake Mushroom Glazed with Ginger Sauce (S$3.90) and Vietnamese Street-styled Corn (S$3.90). There was also an interesting deconstructed Spicy Chicken Banh Mi (S$7.90) which we’d recommend to start with as an appetizer. Do note that this Banh Mi is not as substantive as your usual Banh Mi, which leaves you space for the other grilled delights!
Our favorite skewer was hands down the Iberico Pork Belly (S$5.90). As we sank our teeth into the tender pork belly, the intense flavours of the meat, from the marination in a special Mrs Pho sauce, burst into our mouths. This is a smorgasbord of flavours you do not want to miss.
There was also a Honey Glazed Chicken Skewer (S$3.90) that features a nice crisp exterior which hides a tender and incredibly well seasoned piece of chicken. According to the Mrs Pho team, they brine the meat first in lemongrass and coat it in longan honey before being grilled. This is not your usual chicken for sure.
The range of grilled items also features seafood items for the seafood lovers. This includes Fresh Tiger Prawns (S$12.90) grilled and served with Vietnamese style chilli and Baby Octopus (S$14.90). This two items definitely paled in comparison to their grilled meat though.
While many would immediately think of the comforting soup in a bowl of pho in a Vietnamese restaurant, we found the Mrs Pho Dry Noodle Combo (S$10.90) equally hearty a dish to have whether you are looking for a comforting meal or starving from the lunchtime pangs. The sizeable bowl (which can easily feed two) comes with grilled pork, meatballs, spring rolls and is topped with chopped peanuts. You also get to pour on a sweet and spicy house-made sauce before mixing up all the ingredients together in the bowl.
