Toyota bZ4X review: The practical premium EV with long range and spacious seats

The all-new electric Toyota bZ4X is a strong fit for buyers who are looking for a premium electric SUV that is practical yet polished. It suits a luxury-adjacent demographic especially well: young working professionals, couples upgrading from a sedan, and families who want more space, comfort and a quieter daily drive without moving into the territory of a full-size premium EV.
What stands out most is how well the bZ4X helps the driver deal with daily tasks. The 452-litre boot gives ample luggage space that makes weekend getaways, supermarket runs and family strollers easier to manage than in a smaller EV. The rear seat is also a major plus: there is noticeably more legroom and a more relaxed seating position, so passengers in the back do not feel like an afterthought. For luxury-minded buyers with families in mind, that matters because comfort for everyone in the car is part of the experience, not just the driver’s seat.
On the road, the bZ4X is smooth, comfortable, and an easy vehicle to get used to. While drivers aren’t expected to start a race in this car, the maximum output of 167 kW (223 hp) and 268 Nm of torque will provide drivers enough power for smooth overtaking and the occasional boost (0-100 km/h time of 7.4 seconds) to make it in time for the next appointment or meeting. While the steering wheel itself may feel a touch smaller for some drivers, the steering feels tight and controlled, allowing ample control of the vehicle and making sure the car is still agile enough for any evasive maneuvers. Range anxiety is also less of a concern here, with the car offering an estimated range of up to 478km on a single charge; the bZ4X supports DC charging of up to 150kW, enabling a charge from 10% to 80% in just 28 minutes. It also offers AC charging of up to 22 kW, which can charge the battery from 10% to 100% in approximately 3.5 hours—more than enough for a full day of city driving with energy to spare for the next day!
Toyota has also loaded the bZ4X with the kind of safety and convenience features that would even make first-time drivers feel right at home in the driver’s seat. Blind-spot monitoring, lane support, safe exit alerts, parking assistance, and a panoramic view monitor make it easier to navigate tight urban spaces with less effort. The only real weak link is the native navigation system, which feels clunky and dated compared with the rest of the car, so most drivers will be happier relying on Apple CarPlay and a phone-based navigation app instead. Additionally, the ownership package for the car offers long battery coverage, extended servicing support and efficient roadside assistance in the event of a breakdown.
As a whole, the Toyota bZ4X lands as a smart luxury lifestyle EV rather than an ostentatious one. It is best suited to buyers who want a spacious, safe, well-finished electric SUV for family duties, work commutes and city life, but who also care about the small things that make a car feel easy to own—good rear-seat comfort, useful boot space, decent charging speeds and a calm driving character.
